By Sybil Morneau When training to be a licensed practical nurse (LPN) it is essential to attend a top ranked and fully accredited school with the goal of taking the state licensing exam. The field of nursing is highly rewarding and competitive and it is important to be the best of the best. There are a number of schools offering LPN programs and we will review three of the best. Lincoln Group of Schools – Northeast Philadelphia Campus Lincoln Group of Schools (LGS) has been offering career oriented programs for more than 65 years and the hallmark program is the LPN program. The program combines classroom and clinical training with courses in anatomy, nutrition, pharmacology, microbiology, nursing I and II and patient care. LPN training also includes clinical care with hands on training in simulated settings before taking on real life clinical settings in a hospital. Students will also learn the fine art of filling out reports and interviewing patients to obtain much needed critical information. The instructors are Certified Nursing Educators (CNE) with practical, nursing experience. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and a high school graduate or hold a high school equivalency certificate. Applicants are also required to undergo a criminal background check; drug and alcohol test and fill out the finger print card. Students accepted into the program must maintain a passing grade in order to remain in the program. Graduates will be prepared to take the NCLEX-PN exam required for licensing. Lincoln will also assist graduates in securing employment in a medical facility or setting. Pennsylvania Institute of Technology Pennsylvania Institute of Technology offers a certificate and an Associate’s degree in licensed practical nursing (LPN). Many students who pursue a career in nursing will often earn an LPN certificate and work as an LPN while finishing the requirements for an Associate’s degree. The instructors are certified nursing instructors with a wealth of practical, real world experience and are up to date with the latest and greatest nursing methods. Students receive class room and clinical training and upon graduation will be qualified to take the state mandated NCLEX-PN exam required for licensing. The Institute prides itself on small classes, encouraging focus on the individual student and their strengths and weaknesses. Students will cover subjects as Nursing I and II, microbiology, nutrition, pharmacology and clinical care. Students will also participate in a rotational program at a local hospital and have the opportunity to put their class room studies to the test under the direction of a registered nurse and have the ability to improve their skills before going out into the world of nursing. Prism Career Institute Prism Career Institute offers a licensed practical nurse program that includes the necessary class work, clinical care and laboratory skills. Graduates of the program are easily integrated into a medical team that provides patient care, sample collection, injection preparation and administration, dress wounds, and assist with personal hygiene. Students will also learn how to fill out the necessary daily reports and collect patient data efficiently. Student course work includes microbiology, pharmacology, Nursing I and II and Laboratory I and II. Students also perform an internship in a medical facility. The program prepares the student to take the NCLEX-PN exam, the state mandated licensing exam. The student must pass the licensing exam to earn the title Licensed Practical Nurse. Instructors are certified and licensed nursing instructors with well rounded practical experience. Students admitted to the program will be required to pass a criminal background check and drug and alcohol testing. Applicants must be a high school graduate or hold a GED. Students without a math and science academic background will be required to take the nursing prep class.
