The State of Florida does not require a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) candidate take a state approved training program before taking the state mandated CNA exam, but it is highly recommended. If a CNA applicant does choose to take the exam without the benefit of a training program, the applicant must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.

If an applicant fails either part of the two part exam, they will be required to take the 120 hour training program if the failed portion is not successfully passed within two years or if the same portion of the exam is failed three or more times within a two year time period. When the applicant passes the 120 hour training program, the applicant will still be required to pass the licensing exam.

CNA applicants must provide a finger print card and pass a criminal background check before taking the licensing exam. The two part licensing exam includes a written and clinical skills exam. The written exam is 60 multiple choice questions and the applicant must past the written part of the exam before taking the clinical skills exam. Before a student can have direct hands on contact with patients, 16 hours of class work must be completed.
