Established six years ago in response to the serious nursing shortage in the state of Arizona, the vibrant partnership between the ASU College of Nursing and the Mayo Clinic is still standing strong. The primary benefit of this partnership is that it allows ASU to admit and educate more nursing students each year without sacrificing quality of education.

The Mayo campus includes a nursing site for ASU students to learn from qualified nurse educators and perform clinical learning experiences. Basically all of the required infrastructure is provided by Mayo campus, while program planning, specific course work and general program supervision is the responsibility of ASU. Students receive the benefit of learning from some of the best nurse educators in their respected specialty fields. The Mayo nurse educators also received benefits by being able to expand their job role to include teaching which increases their overall job satisfaction. Students are able to acquire clinical training in state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and simulation centers. Students graduating from the ASU program who participated in coursework at the Mayo campus have demonstrated an extremely high graduation rate and an NCLEX pass rate over 99%, which exceeds state and national averages.

While there is not an official job placement program or agreement in place, many successful Mayo clinic participants end up applying for employment at Mayo after they graduate. A large majority of these students receive formal employment offers from Mayo, although there is no garauntee. Students who participate in the Mayo clinic program also have an advantage in the job market by having this unique experience of studying at one of the most well respected medical institutions in the country. This can also provide an incentive for students to choose ASU because they might be interested in participating in the Mayo clinic portion of the ASU nursing program.

The model that this partnership is based upon is that by combining the strengths of two separate institutions the resulting education delivered to nursing students is of the highest quality possible. Many other schools have followed suit and developed strategic partnerships with local nursing facilities to combine their resources in similar mutually beneficial arrangements. The Mayo clinic / ASU nursing model is continuing to grow and develop in hopes of preparing more nursing students for successful careers providing the highest quality of patient care possible.

The program site coordinator, Bella Panchmatia, has kept the program growing over the last six years by adding new components such as clinical laboratories, simulation sites and classrooms. Since its inception the ASU Mayo clinic nursing program has produced 73 BSN degree graduates and 34 of those individuals are currently employed by Mayo. This shows that Mayo clearly believes in the students they are training and determines them to be sufficiently qualified to work at their facility.
