Partners HealthCare Workforce Development is currently offering a free CNA training program! The program is 5 weeks long and consists of 4 weeks of classroom learning and 1 week of clinical skills practice. Week 1 of classroom instruction takes place at Partners HealthCare campus at Assembly Row (399 Revolution Drive in Somerville, MA). Weeks 2-4 of the classroom segment are conducted in Malden, MA. The clinical skills training is done at the Spaulding Nursing and Therapy Center (100 North Beacon Street, Brighton, MA).

The training curriculum includes Basic Medical Terminology/Anatomy, Workplace Safety and Infection Control, Compliance/HIPAA, Introduction to the Partners HealthCare Workplace Values, Partners Desktop Overview/Microsoft Outlook Training, Problem Solving and Decision Making in HealthCare, Epic Overview Training, Vital Signs and Range of Motion Exercises, Stress Management Techniques, Time Management and Multi-Tasking in Health Care. Graduating students are expected to challenge the CNA certification exam within 30 days of course completion. Exam fees are paid for by Partners HealthCare Workforce Development.

Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) provides health care services in a medical or health care facility. Under the direction of a registered nurse (RN), nursing assistants assist with daily patient care such as dressing, bathing and eating. CNA’s must take an approved training class and pass the mandated certification exam before seeking employment as a CNA. There are a number of facilities that offer approved certified nursing assistant training programs and the cost to take the programs varies. There are educational resources that offer training at no cost to the student.

The Laboure Center

The Laboure Center in South Boston, Massachusetts is administrated by Catholic Charities. It is a community based organization that provides social and educational opportunities. The Center offers a variety of training programs, including a Certified Nursing Assistant training program. The cost of the program is based on income, but the classes are provided at no cost for low income individuals between the ages of 17 and 21 years old.

The program includes 75 hours of classroom instruction and 100 hours of clinical hands on training. The courses include basic nursing skills, geriatrics nursing, nutrition, Anatomy, medical terminology and communication skills. The clinical training is performed under the supervision of a registered nurse at an area health care facility. The program prepares the student to sit for the mandated licensing exam. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts requires all nursing assistants to pass the certification exam to work as a CNA.

Workforce Investment Act (WIA)

The WIA, a federally funded program was established to assist job seekers who need help with developing occupational skills in order to reenter the workforce. One of the programs approved by WIA is a certified nursing assistant program. Participants choose from a list of approved training providers and complete the application of admission. The WIA will cover the cost of the program for those who qualify and help with job placement at the completion of the program.

One such school that accepts students from the WIA program is Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC). The nursing program includes a nursing assistant training program. The program includes 100 hours of classroom study in subjects such as basic and geriatrics nursing skills, medical terminology, Anatomy and nutrition. Students also participate in clinical training at local, area health care facilities. Students will be prepared to take the Commonwealth of Massachusetts mandated certification exam, upon completion of the program.

Boston Job Corp

The United States Department of Labor is the sponsor of the Job Corp program, which formed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The purpose of Job Corp is to provide no cost career training to anyone over the age of 16. To be considered for the program, the individual must meet low income qualifications. One of the programs offered by Job Corp is Certified Nursing Assistant. The training program prepares the student to take the licensing exam as mandated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The CNA training program includes 75 hours of classroom training and 100 hours of clinical, hands on training. The program provides the necessary skills and knowledge that allows the student to work under the direction of a registered nurse in a healthcare setting. The classes include basic nursing and geriatrics care skills, Anatomy and physiology, nutrition, restorative and personal skills care. The clinical training is conducted in an approved healthcare facility.

100% attendance in all classes and clinical training sessions is mandatory, and the student must pass all quizzes and tests. After the training program is completed, the student will be required to submit an application to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts licensing board and take the exam. Once the student receives their certification, Job Corps will assist the student in finding employment.
