Being a Registered Nurse in Ohio

Registered nursing is an ever-growing profession with continuously more jobs available as the years progress. If you live in Ohio, there are a number of Ohio RN programs available to you. Before you choose one you should be aware of what is involved in a nursing program, including required courses, clinical hours, state licensing programs, and so on.

Why Become a Registered Nurse?

Before you start gathering information about Ohio RN programs, you should make sure that nursing is something you are really interested in pursuing as your career. One advantage of nursing is that you will have excellent job security. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, even though there are significant job losses in many other industries, the RN job market is projected to increase as much as 22% in the coming years. In Ohio specifically, there is a great demand for nurses because currently there is a 20% deficit in the number of nurses employed compared with how many are needed. Those high demand numbers, in addition to the fact that RNs in Ohio make an average of $59,740 per year, represent only a couple of the many reasons why nursing is an advantageous career choice.

What Does it Take to Become a Nurse?

To be eligible to work as an RN in Ohio, you must graduate from an approved Ohio RN program and obtain a nursing license. There are different pathways you can take to become a registered nurse in Ohio. The three most common avenues are through a diploma or certificate, an associate’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree. If you plan on allowing for promotion in the nursing field, from a floor nurse to charge nurse to clinical coordinator, you will need to obtain a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing degree. Each of these programs require specific courses that deal with health assessment, good health promotion, and disease prevention, as well as courses that deal with nursing procedures like drawing blood, starting IVs, and inserting catheters; they also require a certain number of clinical experience hours. The exact courses and number of clinical hours required will vary from program to program. Once you have completed a qualified program you will have to take the National Council Licensure Examination, known as the NCLEX-RN. This exam must be passed in order to obtain your RN license in Ohio.

Nurses in Ohio get a terrific salary, great job security, excellent health benefits, flexible hours, and personal satisfaction from their job. It will take hard work, determination, and perseverance to complete the necessary coursework and pass the licensing exam, but it will be worth it in the end. Start researching Ohio RN programs today to find the one that best fits you so you can get started in one of the most lucrative and rewarding health care careers in Ohio.
