How to Become a Registered Nurse in Kentucky The Kentucky Board of Nursing is the agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky governed by the Nurse Practice Act that oversees the nursing programs in Kentucky. Kentucky accepts two degree levels to become a registered nurse; an associates degree and a bachelor degree.
There are many community colleges and junior colleges in the state of Kentucky that offer the associates degree program for registered nurses. Once the associates degree has been earned the student must take the National Certification Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), which is required to practice as a Registered Nurse. The second degree available to prospective registered nurses is the bachelor degree. The bachelor degree requires pretty much the same basic course work that the associates degree does but because it is a four-year college degree program it goes several steps beyond the initial two years of classes. A prospective registered nurse may enroll as a beginning student with no previous nursing courses which takes up to four years to complete. Typically nursing students in an RN program at a four year college are required to complete at least 120 credit hours to graduate. A registered nurse with an associate’s degree may enter an RN to BSN program which allows them to complete the BSN degree without retaking the nursing courses, allowing them to finish their degree much faster. Most RN to BSN programs are not full time programs allowing the registered nurse the opportunity to work while attending classes. The purpose of the BSN program is to provide excellent professional education. Gradates of the BSN program are eligible for higher paying registered nursing positions such as management and nursing specialty fields. Most administrative positions required a BSN degree to apply. BSN graduates are also required to take and pass the National Certification Licensure Examination (RN-NCLEX) to become licensed before beginning work as a registered nurse.
