How to Become a Registered Nurse in Kentucky

The Kentucky Board of Nursing is the agency of the Commonwealth of Kentucky governed by the Nurse Practice Act that oversees the nursing programs in Kentucky. Kentucky accepts two degree levels to become a registered nurse; an associates degree and a bachelor degree. The average RN salary in Kentucky is $62,480 a year, or $30 an hour.

The associates degree can be earned in a two year time frame. The RN Associate Degree Nursing Program is comprised of classroom, laboratory and clinical learning experiences. A combination of classroom lecture with computer based instruction, hands on skills lab and supervised clinical experience in hospitals and medical facilities make the program a successful learning experience for prospective registered nurses.

The courses required to complete this program include: General Education Course, Math, English I and II, General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Computer Literacy, Heritage / Humanities, Human Anatomy, Physiology I and II, Medical Microbiology. Additional courses include Nursing I-V. The program consists of a total of 71 credit hours.

There are many community colleges and junior colleges in the state of Kentucky that offer the associates degree program for registered nurses. Once the associates degree has been earned the student must take the National Certification Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), which is required to practice as a Registered Nurse.

The second degree available to prospective registered nurses is the bachelor degree. The bachelor degree requires pretty much the same basic course work that the associates degree does but because it is a four-year college degree program it goes several steps beyond the initial two years of classes. A prospective registered nurse may enroll as a beginning student with no previous nursing courses which takes up to four years to complete. Typically nursing students in an RN program at a four year college are required to complete at least 120 credit hours to graduate.

A registered nurse with an associate’s degree may enter an RN to BSN program which allows them to complete the BSN degree without retaking the nursing courses, allowing them to finish their degree much faster. Most RN to BSN programs are not full time programs allowing the registered nurse the opportunity to work while attending classes.

The purpose of the BSN program is to provide excellent professional education. Gradates of the BSN program are eligible for higher paying registered nursing positions such as management and nursing specialty fields. Most administrative positions required a BSN degree to apply.

BSN graduates are also required to take and pass the National Certification Licensure Examination (RN-NCLEX) to become licensed before beginning work as a registered nurse.

Approved Kentucky RN Schools

See our complete list of qualified RN nursing education programs in the state of Kentucky. The schools listed here offer pre-licensure nursing programs that meet the registered nursing education requirements set forth by the Kentucky State Board of Nursing. The two most common types of RN programs are: two-year Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) and four-year Bachelor Degree in Nursing (BSN). Although the schools listed on this page are accredited by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and approved by the state of Kentucky, they might not be accredited by national organizations such as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Individuals should check to verify that state-approved nursing schools also enjoy national accreditation if this is something that is important to them.
