Learn how to transfer your nursing license to Georgia (GA)

Written by Nurses Link on December 10th, 2012

The process of transferring an RN license to Georgia starts with contacting Georgia Board of Nursing for necessary forms and updated information. The application should be submitted along with a $60 payment. The check or money order must be payable to Professional Licensing Boards. Numerous requirements are included and must be followed precisely to avoid any lengthy delays. The list below provides all important components of the application process.

Verifications – Verifications of current and original licensure are required. www.nursys.com can be utilized for verification purposes. The applicant may contact the website and request that the verification is made available to the Georgia Board of Nursing. Paper verifications should be included in addition to the application packet when submitting for transfer.

Transcripts – Official transcripts from the educational institutions the applicant attended must be submitted. Individuals who have graduated from non-traditional nursing schools will have to meet certain criteria. If the transcripts cannot be provided, the participant will be asked to complete a preceptorship that is approved by the Board.

Documentation – Proof of graduation from a nursing school and 500 hours of practice as a Registered Nurse are required as part of documentation. Applicants should ask their present employer to complete Verification of Employment Form. Documentation must reflect active practice within a period of four years prior the application. Additional documents include verification of applicant’s citizenship status in the form of a driver’s license, passport or other legally issued methods.

Disciplinary Actions and Background Check – The Georgia Board of Nursing is very strict about voluntary disclosure of any past disciplinary actions. Concealment of this vital information may result in permanent denial of the application preventing the individual from ever transferring their license. If any history of arrest or punitive charges exists, it should be disclosed by the applicant. A certified copy of official documents, accompanied by personal explanation of each incident, should be attached. Criminal background check will be performed by fingerprinting. Details can be found at www.sos.ga.gov/plb/rn.

Paper forms to be completed by the applicant include the following:

• Application with enclosed fee.
• Verification of licensure.
• Verification of employment.
• Consent form to obtain criminal history record.
• Documentation to determine qualified alien status.

Documentation to determine qualified alien status includes, but is not limited to the following:

• USA issued driver’s license.
• USA passport or passport card.
• USA military ID card.
• Tribal ID card issued by federally recognized Native American tribe.
• USA Permanent Resident Card.
• USA Certificate Of Citizenship.
• USA Certificate of Naturalization.

All applications and supporting documentation must be notarized and submitted to Professional Licensing Boards in Georgia. The application is valid for one year from the date of submission. Mailed documents should not be folded or stapled to ensure proper condition and readability when they arrive for processing. The decision for transfer of licensure is based on the documentation provided and verified by the Board. It is imperative to submit all information at once to avoid the delays and confusion.

All forms and detailed information can be found at www.sos.georia.gov.
