Travel Nurse Job Description

A Registered Nurse (R.N.) or in some cases an LPN who takes a work assignment on a per diem basis in a location outside of their immediate geographic location is known as a traveling nurse. The nurse or LVN will perform some or all of the typical duties of a nurse, according to the needs of the employer. Travel nurse jobs originated back in the 1970s in New Orleans, LA. These assignments can often be mutually beneficial for the nurse and the employer. The travel nurse gains exposure to a new work environment and is able to see new places and travel the country while remaining employed. For the employer, hiring a travel nurse allows them to fill a temporary or seasonal need without making a long-term employment commitment. Short term assignments can last anywhere from 4 – 16 week, whereas longer assignments can last up to one year. Travel nurses are usually paid somewhere between $30 – $50 per hour, and also usually receive financial assistance with some of their relocation costs associated with the move. Travel nursing provides a break from the everyday autonomy of working at the same place. Travel nursing jobs are usually highly sought-after and therefore the candidate selection process can become quite competitive.
