How to Become a Registered Nurse in Virginia
Nursing is one of the fastest growing jobs in the United States. Nurses hold about 2.4 million jobs. The average RN salary in Virginia is $76,900 a year, or $40 an hour. Registered nurses perform tasks such as treating patients, consoling patients and family members, recording medical histories, performing diagnostic tests, and administering treatments and medications. Nurses should be caring and detail oriented. Registered nurses can specialize in one or more patient care specialties and can work in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools or even nursing homes.[contentblock id=25]
In order to become a Registered Nurse in Virginia you must graduate from an approved nursing program and pass a national licensing examination, known as the NCLEX-RN, in order to obtain a nursing license. BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) programs, offered by colleges and universities, take about four years to complete. Most Virginia nursing programs include clinical training, classroom instruction, and experience in different health care facilities including hospitals. Many Virginia programs include experience in public health departments, ambulatory clinics, and home health care agencies. Students will take many courses such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology and other behavioral sciences, and nursing. At the end of the program the student must have accumulated 500 hours of contact with patients under the supervision of teaching staff.
There are many schools that offer BSN programs in Virginia, such as Lynchburg College, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Norfolk State University, Eastern Mennonite University and many more. When you have finished an RN pre-licensure education program you should request for your school to send your official transcript to the Virginia Board of Nursing. Once your transcript has been sent off you can request a test date to take the NCLEX-RN examination and apply online for your RN license from the Virginia Board of Nursing. Once you have applied, contact Pearson Vue to register for the NCLEX-RN. You must pass this licensing exam to become a registered nurse. Once you have taken the exam you will wait for them to mail you your results. You can work while you await the results for a period of up to 90 days with authorization from the board.

Accredited Virginia RN Schools
See our complete list of qualified RN nursing education programs in the state of Virginia. The schools listed here offer pre-licensure nursing programs that meet the registered nursing education requirements set forth by the Virginia State Board of Nursing. Although the schools listed on this page are accredited by the Virginia Board of Nursing and approved by the state of Virginia, they might not be accredited by national organizations such as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Individuals should check to see if the state-approved nursing school they are considering also enjoys national accreditation status if they are seeking a school with both accreditations.
