There are a plethora of professional nursing programs in different schools in the state in addition to numerous community colleges like the Mesa State College, Regis University, Colorado State University, and many others.

The programs offered in Colorado are simply admirable at first mention. They include diploma, bachelor and associates programs. The availability of online programs is being rapidly developed as we speak, although most nursing programs will require at least some portion of training in a hands-on clinical format.

Diploma in nursing is one of the oldest programs in the state. It last approximately three years with 30 and 60 credit hours of thorough learning in physiology, anatomy, nutrition, chemistry and microbiology followed by intensive nurse classes.

Associates degree in nursing (ADN) is a two year degree, but some four years colleges are offering it with additional course work that extends the program to between 3-4 years. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a four year degree program that further prepares the students for later enrolling in a graduate program.

The first two years in a BSN program are spent completing general education requirements, while the remaining time is spent in nursing major courses. The BSN has additional optional co-requisite courses that can further stretch the program to take more than the four years mentioned, especially if the student won’t be attending summer school. Bachelor of Science in nursing is considered an academic degree that emphasizes nursing theory and scientific research. The BSN program track consists of more classroom hours and more clinical hours than the Associates degree program.

After the completion of the nursing education requirement, one is not accredited as a fully licensed nurse until they pass a licensing examination. The license examination not only applies in Colorado but also to nurses in other US states. After completion of one of the above three programs the graduating student will take the NCLEX-RN exam. The exam is the final requirement for one to become a licensed RN. Once they become licensed they will not have to renew their license for two more years.
