Registered Nurse Education in New York (NY)

The job of an RN is one of the most sought-after positions in the nursing field. It is the largest health care profession in the United States. There are certain requirements that each individual must meet in order to obtain the professional designation of being a licensed registered nurse. The average RN salary in New York is $96,170 a year, or $46 an hour.

To become a registered nurse in New York, you must first complete an approved registered nurse education program from an educational institution. There are 3 different types of nursing programs that an individual may complete to become an RN.

1. Diploma Programs are usually given through a hospital, however, the student will usually take some classes at a college as well.

2. An Associate’s Degree in Nursing is a 2 year program offered at a community college or a junior college. While attending one of these institutions the student will receive the basic information needed to perform basic nursing tasks.

3. The baccalaureate degree is a 4 year program through a college or university. The focus point of this program is to develop critical thinking and nursing skills at a higher level. BSN programs develop more in-depth nursing knowledge and include more scientific research studies.

New York State also requires anyone who wishes to work as a register nurse to have good morals, be at least 18, and to complete coursework in the identification and reporting of child abuse.

After graduation, the next step would be to take the NCLEX Exam. NCLEX stands for the National Council Licensure Examination. It is used to determine if a student is ready for entry level nursing practice. This test will assess a student’s understanding of various nursing practices and cover subjects based on specific nursing curriculum.

Due to the increasing demand for health care workers, a career in nursing would certainly be worthwhile. Becoming a nurse would allow a person to help others on a daily basis. The nurse is the person who spends the most time with patients on a daily basis. Nurses really make a difference in the lives of others. Gaining experience in any field takes time and nursing is no exception. Career nurses will develop a thorough knowledge of many skills which include a firm grasp of science, math, reading and writing. It takes time to learn, but it is necessary to become a quality care provider. A nurse must be most familiar with science, especially biology, anatomy and physiology.

Nursing school programs are now available that can fit into many different schedules and lifestyles. Courses are available for full time as well as part time students and can even be taken online.
