Obstetrics Nurse OB GYN Job Description

A nurse or LVN that specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology will focus on caring for women and their babies from the first detection stage of pregnancy all the way through birth. These types of nurses typically work within a small team of healthcare professionals to guide the patient through their pregnancy. Working closely with Physicians, Perinatal Nurses, Nurse Midwives and others, the OB GYN plays an important role in the health and development of both mother and child. They can work in large public hospitals, small private doctor’s offices or healthcare clinics. The daily job duties vary according to how many patients they currently have under their care, how far along each patient is in their pregnancy and any health conditions or complications that each patient is dealing with. The job duties of an OB GYN Nurse will vary from routine daily care and monitoring to carrying out specific treatment plans and assisting in the Labor and Delivery process. Beyond childbirth, some Obstetrics Nurses treat female patients with issues including puberty, menstruation, hormone treatments, sexual health, intercourse, reproduction and menopause.
