Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Job Description

A Licensed Practical Nurse, also known as a Vocational Nurse is an intermediary position between a CNA and an RN. The education requirements for entry into this profession consist of either a Diploma / Certificate program or a 2-year Associate’s degree. Many LPNs later decide to pursue the Registered Nurse designation by completing further schooling and the NCLEX-RN examination. Daily job duties can include patient care, medical record keeping, monitoring vital signs, etc. Practical nurses can find work in assisted living centers, rehab facilities, private clinics, doctors offices, dental offices, and hospitals. The average LPN salary is about $42,400 per year, or $20.30 per hour, $3,533 per month, also equivalent to $815 per week. The top 10% of LPNs earn an average of $53,580 annually, which equals out to $4,465 per month. There are many bridge programs available to go from LPN to RN and boost your marketability, take on increased job responsibilities and earn more money. Vocational nurses usually work as a part of a team of healthcare professionals to deliver the best possible patient care. Therefore, an ideal LPN candidate should be good at working with others, and also highly empathetic towards patients.
