How to Become a Registered Nurse in Washington

Nursing is one of the most competitive college programs in the country. Getting into a nursing program can be difficult due to limited enrollment, but it is also very rewarding. In Washington State, there are a lot of different options for getting into nursing school, so the most important consideration is which program is the best fit for you. When determining which program is the best fit for you, you will want to understand what course work is required, what the state of Washington’s licensing requirements are, and the availability of the program.

The average RN salary in Washington is $96,980 a year, or $50 an hour. Some general course requirements for RN programs in Washington include around 28 credits of general education including Philosophy, Religious Studies, English, Statistics, Literature, Biology and Social or Behavioral Sciences. Once you have completed some general requirements, you will need to fulfill about 28 more credits of lower division nursing requirements, which include the basics of nursing. Most programs also require you to complete the same amount of upper division nursing requirements such as Professional Communication, Holistic Health, Centered Health Care and other classes related to health care. It’s also required to take some upper division classes that give you opportunities to put nursing into practice by working in a hospital. Of course, requirements can vary by school, but in Washington, these are some requirements that can be generally expected.

Another thing to consider is Washington’s RN licensing requirements. Once you are done with school, it is necessary to obtain proper licensing so you can practice as a registered nurse. In order to get a license in Washington, you have to pass the NCLEX-RN exam, fill out a series of applications and complete a criminal background check. Once your application has gone through the review process and you have completed the background check, you can obtain a license. One thing to consider is not all programs are considered accredited and accepted by the licensing division, so before you choose a program, make sure that the nursing licensing division recognizes your program as an approved nursing program.

Another thing to consider before applying is the availability of the programs. Some programs have a lot of students apply and only a few are accepted. One way to avoid running into this problem is to contact someone in charge of admissions before you start applying to see how many incoming students will be accepted into the program. You can also inquire as to what admissions personnel look for in an applicant, so that you can better prepare and craft your application to increase your chances of being accepted. If you don’t feel like you are a good fit for a specific program, it is better not to waste your time applying, and to put your energy towards applying for a program that is right for you.
