Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) Job Description

To become a Nurse Anesthetist one must first gain R.N. certification and then obtain additional training in Anesthesiology. Once the Advanced Practice Nurse is awarded their credentials in Anesthesiology they can begin practicing as a Nurse Anesthetist also commonly known as a CRNA. This job position is highly specialized and only focuses on assisting the Physician and Anesthesiologist in administering anesthetic to patients undergoing surgical procedures. The CRNA will typically work in conjunction with other healthcare providers as part of a team designed to provide the best patient care possible. Many CRNAs find employment in the Armed Services, providing anesthesia to members of the U.S. military, while others find gainful employment in private doctors offices, surgery clinics and hospitals. The average salary for a CRNA is around $160,000 while some Nurse Anesthetists earn up to $240,000 per year. Anyone considering this career should carefully weigh the pros and cons before making any life-altering decisions. Graduate level education is required and can be expensive, although there might be student loans, grants and/or scholarships available to some students.
