How Much Can You Make as a CNA in Maryland?


As a certified nursing assistant you have the option to specialize as a medicine aide, developmental disabilities aide or home health aide, to name a few. All have different job descriptions and areas of specialty, but each type of position is available to a licensed nurse aide. The average CNA salary in Maryland is $41,556 per year.


How to Become a CNA in Maryland


Students can earn their CNA certification and start their career as a certified nursing assistant in less than six months. The first step is to find and complete an approved CNA training program. Each individual state sets its own required amount of credit hours necessary to become a CNA. Typical programs take around 6-12 weeks to complete and must include a minimum of 75 hours of training. The average cost of a CNA course is between $800 – $1,500. The second step is to take the Maryland CNA certification exam and achieve a passing score. The third and final step is to register with the Maryland Nurse Aide Registry as a Certified Nursing Assistant.


Can I Transfer My CNA License to Maryland?


If you are a certified nursing assistant from another state and have just moved to Maryland you can apply to the Nursing Aide Registry in Maryland for what is called “reciprocity”. As long as you can provide verification that you completed a state approved CNA certification program, are currently certified in another state, and have worked as a CNA recently. You would not need to take the Maryland exam or training if you are granted reciprocity. All CNA licenses need to be renewed every two years and must have worked a minimum of 160 hours within those two years.


How Much Does CNA Training Cost? How Long Does it Take?


As far as the training and requirements are concerned, expect Maryland’s nursing schools to teach students the skills you need to learn to provide excellent care as a nursing assistant when attending a training course. Provided within the program, you will have classroom, lab, and clinical instruction providing you with the knowledge and skills required to be a CNA. The state of Maryland requires at least 100 to 120 hours of training for nursing assistant candidates. Some courses you may encounter are math, anatomy, science, and healthcare law. You must choose a training course program that has been approved and recognized by the state of Maryland. When all course work is complete, you must sit for the CNA certification exam. This particular exam is administered by the Geriatric Nursing assistant Testing Service of Maryland. It is a must to pass the written as well as the skills test if you want to become certified. Once the test is passed, the candidate must also pass a background check in order to become licensed to work in the state.
