Choosing to become a CNA (certified nursing assistant) presents some outstanding and varied career opportunities to graduates wishing to work in the caregiving career fields. The course of study is short in duration but delivers many useful and in-demand job skills. Certified nursing assistants are in high demand throughout the nation, and shortages persist in many areas, driving wages higher and higher for qualified applicants. Job growth for certified nursing assistants is projected to grow at rates greater than those of almost any professional position. In Illinois, many training programs are available to provide interested students with the job skills and professional training needed to take the next step in an exciting and rewarding career.


How Much Does CNA Training Cost?


Students can earn their CNA certification and start their career as a certified nursing assistant in less than six months. The first step is to find and complete an approved CNA training program. Each individual state sets its own required amount of credit hours necessary to become a CNA. Typical programs take around 6-12 weeks to complete and must include a minimum of 75 hours of training. The average cost of a CNA course is between $800 – $1,500. The second step is to take the Illinois CNA certification exam and achieve a passing score. The third and final step is to register with the Illinois Nurse Aide Registry as a Certified Nursing Assistant.






How Much Can You Make as a CNA in Illinois?


The average CNA salary is $46,295 per year in Illinois. Many positions pay considerably more for experienced CNAs with specialized training, experience or skills, and working with challenging populations in the mental, behavioral and developmental services can earn certified nursing assistants much higher wages and benefits.


How to Become a CNA in Illinois

Nurse aide programs are usually offered at community colleges, junior colleges, trade schools and technical/vocational schools. Many long-term care facilities offer CNA training to current employees and trainees. In many cases these programs are not widely advertised, but can be found by calling the facilities directly.


Many community colleges offer certification programs in nursing assistant skills training, and can present great value to students interested in obtaining a rewarding career without spending a great deal of money on their education. Many community colleges offer coursework in nursing assistant studies, and are often priced considerably below the many private schools that abound throughout the state. The downside of community college programs may be waiting lists or delayed entry for interested students, and should be investigated thoroughly before committing.


Similarly, many private schools and colleges offer studies and programs for nursing assistants. While the quality of education is very often on par with or better than community college programs, high costs may deter interested applicants.


Can I Transfer My CNA License to Illinois?


If you are a certified nursing assistant from another state and have just moved to Illinois you can apply to the Nursing Aide Registry in Illinois for what is called “reciprocity”. As long as you can provide verification that you completed a state approved CNA certification program, are currently certified in another state, and have worked as a CNA recently. You would not need to take the Illinois exam or training if you are granted reciprocity. All CNA licenses need to be renewed every two years and must have worked a minimum of 160 hours within those two years.

Nursing assistants earning their certification in the state of Illinois enjoy a wide range of employment opportunities. While many nursing assistants go on to work in a variety of senior-related care environments, other opportunities are available as well. Students with an interest in mental health or developmental and behavioral health will find a great many opportunities for employment in community, residential and long-term care facilities. Also popular with many certified nursing assistants are home health care positions, many of which offer flexible scheduling and opportunities to work one-on-one with patients requiring care in the privacy of their own homes.
