CNA careers in Georgia provide strong employment opportunities and above average compensation. In the next five years, the number of CNA positions is expected to increase by 17 percent. While many sectors of the economy are retracting, health care is expanding as the US population grows older. Georgia CNA programs are available in health care institutions, community colleges and vocational schools. Some classes may be taken at night or online to accommodate current work schedules.

You must renew your certification every two years. The state of Georgia will issue a letter of renewal to all CNAs reminding them of this requirement. In order to renew, the licensee must provide proof of hours worked, at least eight from nursing homes, within the previous 24 months. Failing to comply will result in the CNA being required to re-take a training course and competency exam.

How Much Can You Make as a CNA in Georgia?

The average CNA in Georgia earns up to $36,000 annually. They can earn more in larger cities, and can expect to earn less in more rural areas. To earn more money, CNAs should consider relocating to a city with a large number of nursing homes, health care facilities and medical clinics. The number of years of experience and type of employer also play a role in determining salary range.

How Long Does it Take and How Much Does it Cost?

To become a Certified Nursing Assistant in Georgia you must complete the necessary steps to obtain certification from the Georgia state board of nursing. The first step is to find and complete an approved CNA training program. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) requires all CNA programs to include a minimum of 75 hours of instruction. Individual states might require additional training beyond the national minimum. Most programs take about 6-12 weeks to finish. The average cost of a CNA training course is between $400 – $800. The second step is to take the Georgia CNA certification exam and achieve a passing score. The third and final step is to register with the Georgia Nurse Aide Registry as a Certified Nursing Assistant. All potential CNAs must complete 85 hours of training, which covers clinical practice and classroom studies. The selected courses must be approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing for the student to be eligible to take the competency evaluation exam. The test consists of two parts: clinical and written. Students must pass both sections to obtain their certification. Students are allowed to re-take the test up to three times upon failing. A clean criminal background is required. Felonies or misdemeanors will eliminate you from the CNA registry.

Can I Transfer My CNA License to Georgia?

A nursing assistant may be eligible for a license transfer if they hold a valid CNA certification in another state. The application for reciprocity will be examined by the state of Georgia board of nursing to verify that the nurse aide is in good standing in their state of practice.
