How to Become a Registered Nurse in New Jersey
Registered nurses work in healthcare, and besides helping save lives, they also provide education to the public on nutrition, illnesses, injuries, recovery, and exercise. They treat patients independently, as well as provide assistance to doctors. There are three basic steps to becoming a registered nurse in New Jersey: earning a degree or diploma, acquiring clinical experience, and obtaining a state license. A registered nurse career has several pathways for advancement. The average RN salary in New Jersey is $94,690 per year, or $45.52 per hour. [contentblock id=25]
Future nurses can start by enrolling in an Associate’s Degree in Nursing (ADN) program that takes 2-3 years to complete in order to meet the minimum nurse education requirements. They take several different courses to prepare them for what they will face in clinical settings. Other coursework includes training in basic areas of nursing and learning about mothers, newborns, and psychiatric patients. The classes students will take are nursing leadership, management, anatomy, biology, informatics and health assessments.
During the second year of an ADN program, students have to complete a certain number of hours of clinical work. The nursing faculty at a hospital or health center guides the student in training. Students will learn how to handle different types of patients, and the equipment commonly used by nurses.
In a baccalaureate degree or bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) program the course work is expanded to go further in-depth on nursing science topics. The additional two years it takes to finish a Bachelor degree is a smart investment to make in your future. BSN degree recipients will be better prepared to work as a nurse in a variety of settings. Nurses who hold a Bachelor degree also enjoy higher salaries and are more desirable to health care employers.
Getting a state license is the third step in becoming a registered nurse. In order to be eligible for a registered nursing license you must complete an approved professional nursing or practical nursing program in an institution which the New Jersey State Board of Nursing has approved. You then must pass the NCLEX-RN licensing examination. The New Jersey Board of Nursing also requires you to pay a $200 fee for Licensure By Examination and provide a criminal history background check.
Many people choose to become a registered nurse in New Jersey because of the strong job security. There is always a demand for nurses who are committed to helping others, and that demand is steadily growing. There are several nursing schools in New Jersey each offering education and training to start a registered nurse career. There are 12 nurse diploma programs, 16 ADN programs and 17 BSN programs located throughout the state which makes it easy for New Jersey students to become nurses.
