Registered Nurse RN Classes in Georgia

To become a Registered Nurse (RN) in Georgia you need to complete either an Associates Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor Degree in Nursing at an institution that is approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing. The average RN salary in Georgia is $75,040 a year, or $36 an hour. Most ADN programs can be completed within two years and BSN programs take roughly four years to finish. A basic associates degree program consists of 30 credit hours of prerequisite courses in subjects like psychology, biology and statistics. A nursing candidate must then complete 32 credit hours in specific nursing courses. In summary, 62 hours consisting of general education classes and nursing courses are required.

There are many schools in Georgia that offer the Associates Degree in Nursing both on-campus and online which results in finding a school in your area quite easy. Georgia, as well as the rest of the U.S., is facing a shortage of nurses. Providers are operating at a 20% vacancy rate for nursing positions. To offset this shortage, the state of Georgia has dramatically increased its funding to recruit new nurses. Money for scholarships and other incentives such as service-canceled loans might be available to nursing students.

The largest school in Georgia to offer an Associates Degree in Nursing is Georgia Perimeter College located in Decatur, GA. They have campuses throughout Georgia, in Clarkston, Covington, Alpharetta and Dunwoody. Other examples of schools which offer an RN program are Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia; Augusta State University in Augusta, Georgia; and, Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia.

Some examples of accredited online schools that offer RN programs are Georgia Southern University, Georgia State University and Kennesaw State University.

Once you obtain your Associates Degree in Nursing from an approved school you must take the NCLEX-RN exam. This exam is the licensing exam required for a nurse in order to practice in any U.S. state. An application can be obtained from The Georgia Board of Nursing. The following must be submitted in order to take the exam:

2. An official college transcript
3. A completed background check
