Becoming a Registered Nurse in Florida In order to become a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Florida you must complete a state approved Florida RN program. There are over 100 state approved programs in the state of Florida. The Florida Board of Nursing in the official agency responsible for approving RN schools in the state of Florida. There are two types of degree programs that meet the RN education requirement. The Associates degree program is the quickest way to become a licensed RN in Florida. The Associate program can be completed in two years although a lot of these require admission to a college or university which will require prerequisites that will extend the time to closer to three years. Prerequisites in English, biology, math and chemistry can be spread over two semesters in advance to entering an Associate in Nursing program. Because the RN program is extremely competitive to be accepted into, it is wise to carry a very good grade point average on the prerequisites. Other state approved RN schools allow students to elect to participate either full time or part time. Full time means they finish in four semesters and part time in seven semesters. Upon completing the Associates program students are required to pass the National Council Licensure Examination – Registered Nurse in order to receive their RN license. Once they receive their license, they are eligible to work as a Registered Nurse in the state of Florida. Florida also has an online program at some schools that offer those holding Associate Degrees a way to receive their BSN doing online courses. Prior to becoming a registered nurse the graduate will also need to take and pass the NCLEX-RN exam in the state of Florida.
