Nursing is one of the most desirable professions in today’s job market. The US health care industry is growing rapidly and demand is consistent for health care providers. Nurse aides (commonly referred to as CNAs) fill important roles in many different types of medical facilities, including hospitals, private doctors offices, long-term care facilities, assisted living centers, hospice treatment centers and nursing homes. Since the education and training requirements to become a CNA can be completed in under 3 months and usually cost less than $1000 the CNA is a very accessible entry-level health care position. As far as the training and requirements are concerned, expect Maryland’s nursing schools to teach students the skills you need to learn to provide excellent care as a nursing assistant when attending a training course. Provided within the program, you will have classroom, lab, and clinical instruction providing you with the knowledge and skills required to be a CNA. The state of Maryland requires at least 100 to 120 hours of training for nursing assistant candidates. Some courses you may encounter are math, anatomy, science, and healthcare law. You must choose a training course program that has been approved and recognized by the state of Maryland. When all course work is complete, you must sit for the CNA certification exam. This particular exam is administered by the Geriatric Nursing assistant Testing Service of Maryland. It is a must to pass the written as well as the skills test if you want to become certified. Once the test is passed, the candidate must also pass a background check in order to become licensed to work in the state.

How to Become a CNA in Maryland Students can earn their CNA certification and start their career as a certified nursing assistant in less than six months. The first step is to find and complete an approved CNA training program. Each individual state sets its own required amount of credit hours necessary to become a CNA. Typical programs take around 6-12 weeks to complete and must include a minimum of 75 hours of training. The average cost of a CNA course is between $400 – $800. The second step is to take the Maryland CNA certification exam and achieve a passing score. The third and final step is to register with the Maryland Nurse Aide Registry as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
