Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) in Louisiana are in great demand at hospitals, private nursing homes and long-term care facilities. Hence, many students prefer to take up CNA training right after their high school graduation. Following the completion of the training program, you must pass a test so that you can receive your CNA certification. You must complete a minimum of 80 hours of training during your CNA education program. Out of the 80 hours, the initial 40 hours will have to do with classroom training and the next 40 hours will require hands-on training in a nursing home or hospital in Louisiana. To enroll in a CNA program in the State of Louisiana, you must be 18 years of age and must submit a health check up record as well as a criminal background report. At the end of the program, you must be prepared to take the CNA test at any one of the test locations that is approved by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing. The skills portion of the test will be comprised of five skills as well as a physical demonstration on a volunteer. You will also have to answer a number of multiple choice questions in the written part of the examination. Once you pass the test, you can apply to have your name included on the Louisiana Nurse Aide Registry. Reciprocity Application in Louisiana If you are a licensed CNA in another state and wish to migrate to Louisiana and work as a CNA, you must have a clean work record in your home state. How to Become a CNA in Louisiana Students can earn their CNA certification and start their career as a certified nursing assistant in less than six months. The first step is to find and complete an approved CNA training program. Each individual state sets its own required amount of credit hours necessary to become a CNA. Typical programs take around 6-12 weeks to complete and must include a minimum of 75 hours of training. The average cost of a CNA course is between $400 – $800. The second step is to take the Louisiana CNA certification exam and achieve a passing score.
