How to Become a Registered Nurse in Missouri

People who enjoy helping others should consider becoming a registered nurse. The average RN salary in Missouri is $61,920 a year, or $30 an hour. People interested in becoming a nurse need to choose a facility that is properly accredited to instruct nursing students. No educational institution can guarantee placement due to changes in the economy, student progress and other factors beyond their control. Schools and institutions that make promises that seem too good to be true probably are. Finding the program that is best for you is a big decision and should be carefully planned.

Community College Nursing Programs

People who simply want to become a registered nurse and do not care about moving up the ladder to higher nursing ranks might find a community college to be their best option. The community college will require them to take some general education courses that have nothing to do with nursing, but that is part of earning an Associates degree. A community college registered nursing certificate will include course work directly related to nursing as well. The instructors will ensure that the students obtain a solid working knowledge of the science of nursing. Many community colleges have laboratories that allow nursing students to practice real life techniques without someone’s life being at stake. A certification in this type of program only takes two years, so the student can quickly become a registered nurse.

Four Year College Nursing Programs

People who want to become an RN, but also have a desire to move up the ladder and try new employment positions might be better suited by a Bachelor’s degree program. Having a BSN degree puts the individual in the best position to secure a supervisory job, administrative job or nursing management role. Even though the person who graduates with a bachelors degree will still likely start as a registered nurse, they may be able to secure a higher salary or land their first job faster than someone with a diploma or Associates degree. Doctor’s offices and other medical facilities will likely hire someone with a higher level of education, as this shows they have more potential for advancement and a stronger educational foundation. Nurses who take the Associate degree route can still return to school at a later date and pursue further education.

These are the two most common ways to satisfy the nursing education requirement in Missouri. People interested in becoming registered nurses should contact medical practices that they are interested in working for. This will allow them to find out what type of credentials their staff has. The student will then be able to make a more informed decision about which program will help them achieve their specific goals.

Accredited Missouri RN Schools

See our complete list of qualified RN nursing education programs in the state of Missouri. The schools listed here offer pre-licensure nursing programs that meet the registered nursing education requirements set forth by the Missouri State Board of Nursing. Although the schools listed on this page are accredited by the Missouri Board of Nursing and approved by the state of Missouri, they might not be accredited by national organizations such as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC). Individuals should check to see if the state-approved nursing school they are considering also enjoys national accreditation status if they are seeking a school with both accreditations.
