Registered Nurse RN Programs in Nebraska

Those desiring to become an RN in Nebraska must pass the National Council Licensure Examination. To prepare for the test, students need to complete a state approved nursing program. These programs are available in Fremont, Grand Island, Kearney, Lincoln, Norfolk, North Platte, Omaha and Scottsbluff. In addition, a student may be able to complete some of the coursework online. The average RN salary in Nebraska is $64,000 a year, or $31 an hour.

The programs in Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk, Kearney and Scottsbluff are all run by the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s nursing program. To be admitted to the University of Nebraska’s nursing program, the student needs to have completed four units in English. Additionally, the prospective student must also complete three units in mathematics, social studies, and natural sciences along with two units of a foreign language. The student must be in the top 50th percentile of their high school class, have an ACT score of at least 20 or an SAT score of at least 950.

During the beginning of the program students will take an introduction to professional nursing and complete a course in health assessment and promotion. Along with these courses the student will complete a pharmacology course and a foundation of nursing care course. After successful completion of these courses, the student will then take an adult nursing class, and learn about alterations in health care. The student will also learn how to perform research in health care. After successful completion of this level, the student will proceed to the next level where they will take a maternity nursing class and a class titled “Current Issues in Nursing”. Upon completion, the student will then be required to take a mental health course, a community health course, and a class in caring for the elderly. During their senior year, students will take a health policy class and learn to manage clients with complex health problems. They will also take a nursing management course and complete a clinical practicum.

After successfully completing an accredited nursing program in Nebraska, graduating students are then eligible to challenge the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), which includes approximately 120 questions. The exam will take about two and a half hours to complete. The test covers five critical areas which are:

• Surgical nursing

• Children’s health care

• Mental Health Care

• Maternal Health care

• Fundamental Skills

If the candidate passes the NCLEX-RN exam they can apply for licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Nebraska and will be added to the State Nurse Registry list.
