How to Become a Registered Nurse in Virginia

Nursing is one of the fastest growing jobs in the United States. Nurses hold about 2.4 million jobs. The average RN salary in Virginia is $76,900 a year, or $40 an hour. Registered nurses perform tasks such as treating patients, consoling patients and family members, recording medical histories, performing diagnostic tests, and administering treatments and medications. Nurses should be caring and detail oriented. Registered nurses can specialize in one or more patient care specialties and can work in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools or even nursing homes.

In order to become a Registered Nurse in Virginia you must graduate from an approved nursing program and pass a national licensing examination, known as the NCLEX-RN, in order to obtain a nursing license. BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing) programs, offered by colleges and universities, take about four years to complete. Most Virginia nursing programs include clinical training, classroom instruction, and experience in different health care facilities including hospitals. Many Virginia programs include experience in public health departments, ambulatory clinics, and home health care agencies. Students will take many courses such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology and other behavioral sciences, and nursing. At the end of the program the student must have accumulated 500 hours of contact with patients under the supervision of teaching staff.

There are many schools that offer BSN programs in Virginia, such as Lynchburg College, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Norfolk State University, Eastern Mennonite University and many more. When you have finished an RN pre-licensure education program you should request for your school to send your official transcript to the Virginia Board of Nursing. Once your transcript has been sent off you can request a test date to take the NCLEX-RN examination and apply online for your RN license from the Virginia Board of Nursing. Once you have applied, contact Pearson Vue to register for the NCLEX-RN. You must pass this licensing exam to become a registered nurse. Once you have taken the exam you will wait for them to mail you your results. You can work while you await the results for a period of up to 90 days with authorization from the board.

Individuals should check to see if the state-approved nursing school they are considering also enjoys national accreditation status if they are seeking a school with both accreditations.
