New York Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Career Overview

For those who reside in New York, becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse will provide a viable means of employment and a career in the nursing field. The LPN position offers easy entry into the profession by requiring minimal educational background and a short training period.

To begin the process, a state-approved training program has to be completed in order to gain eligibility for licensure. After finishing an LPN education program, the individual will have to complete and pass the computer-based NCLEX-PN exam to gain LPN certification in the state of New York.

Most training programs in New York are offered by junior and community colleges or technical/vocational schools. In general, every program has its own benefits. While some training programs will require a high school diploma for entry, others will accept candidates without one, plus allow candidates to count the program as part of their high-school curriculum. Nevertheless, a majority of LPN training programs are only one year-long, and they include supervised clinical practice and classroom study.

Although job openings for LPNs vary according to current economic conditions, the employment scale of LPNs is exceptionally good. Many health care facilities require a large number of LPN staff members to run efficiently and according to state guidelines for minimum number of caretakers per number of patients. Some of the best settings for LPNs to find fantastic employment opportunities are home healthcare, hospitals and nursing care facilities. While many procedures are being performed in physicians’ private offices there is a demand for LPNs to fill open positions assisting doctors. This is one of the reasons why LPNs find higher paying positions outside of hospitals, because private practice doctors are usually willing to pay more for qualified and capable staff members. Nevertheless, hospitals’ demand for LPNs will always remain high because they are such large organizations and require so many care takers to operate.

The various topics covered in these training courses include the following subjects:

. Anatomy
. Pharmacology
. Physiology
. Basic diagnostic procedures
. Nursing for the elderly
. Rehabilitation nursing
. Infection control
. Medical nursing
. Surgical nursing
. Pediatric nursing

As LPNs increase their overall knowledge and gain experience within their profession, advancements and new job opportunities might become available. While some LPNs working in nursing homes may move up to become charge nurses, others may choose to advance their education and become registered nurses.

This line of work is built for those who have the innate gift to care for others. Undoubtedly, ardent LPNs gain and come away with immeasurable benefits, to say the least. The vicissitudes of life are far from predictable, so having passionate workers such as LPNs will forever remain in demand. Thanks to the wide range of LPN training programs available throughout New York state, aspiring students are able to find ways to fulfill their dreams and career goals of becoming licensed practical nurses.

New York LPN Schools

Our directory lists all New York schools that currently offer approved practical nursing programs. The New York state board of nursing is the regulatory organization in charge of approving LPN education programs. To gain approval, educational institutions must demonstrate to the board of nursing that their program sufficiently prepares students with the knowledge and skills expected of a licensed practical nurse. The on-going approval of a program depends largely upon their graduation rates and the NCLEX pass rates of their graduates. If a program starts to produce poor results in either of these two categories they can quickly lose their state approval or be placed on probationary approval status until their results improve.

Required LPN Classes in New York

The specific course work required in practical nursing programs can differ from institution to institution. However, there are some subjects that are almost always included in most programs. Typical LPN classes include Anatomy & Physiology, Basic Nursing Skills, Nutrition, Math for Nurses, Psychology and Pharmacology. Topics covered within these subjects prepare students with the knowledge base required to perform the work of a licensed practical nurse.

How to Become an LPN in New York

Start the process by researching available education programs to find one that suits your schedule and preferences. The next step is to enroll and complete an LPN training program that is approved by the New York Board of Nursing. Most LPN programs take roughly one year to finish. Upon successful completion of all course requirements you are eligible to challenge the NCLEX-PN exam. After passing the test you can register with the state of New York as a licensed practical nurse and begin searching for employment.

Taking the NCLEX-PN Exam in New York

When it comes time to challenge the practical nursing license exam it is advisable to prepare for the exam with a self-study program or classroom prep course. Knowing what to expect on the actual test and completing practice questions can increase your chances of passing. When you feel ready to take the test, apply for your practical nursing license with the New York state board of nursing and register with Pearson VUE. There is a $200 fee required in order to register for the exam. The next step is to wait until you receive confirmation of your Authorization to Test (ATT). Once you receive your ATT you can schedule your NCLEX exam with Pearson VUE at a nearby testing center.
