Prospective nurse aides in Wyoming must first obtain CNA certification and get listed on the State Nursing Assistant Registry. To begin the licensing process, individuals are required to complete CNA training classes as part of an approved CNA training program. Such programs operate under the jurisdiction of the Wyoming Department of Health. Before signing up for the classes, candidates will need to pass a medical exam and pass a criminal background check. The course will include no less than 75 hours of training, of which at least 16 hours must be in a clinical format. Students will have to show that they can interact in an effective manner with other health care professionals as well as patients. Learning to take vital signs, providing necessary personal care, learning medical terminology and record keeping are among the skills taught within the program. With a passing grade on both parts of the examination, the student will receive their certification in the mail and can apply to the Wyoming Nurse Aide Registry. To maintain the right to practice as a nursing assistant you will have to renew your license every other year. Certification expires on the last day of the year every two years. The requirements for certification renewal are: • Show proof that you have worked at least 16 hours while being certified over the previous 2 years • Attend at least 24 hours of continued nursing aide training during the last two years • Show proof of completed CNA training and Wyoming CNA competency examination Wyoming, with the help of recent grants, is working hard to avoid becoming one of the states with the greatest shortage of nurses by the year 2020.
