How to Become a CNA in West Virginia

The starting point to becoming a CNA is enrolling in a state-approved training program. Such programs can be found at various community colleges, technical or vocational training institutions, private schools and some nursing facilities. Programs offered through nursing facilities offer on-the-job training and usually cover the cost of the education, certification exam and any applicable licensing fees. This benefit is awarded in exchange for a future period of employment at the facility once the individual becomes a licensed nurse aide. Some of the basic prerequisites for most CNA programs are a high school diploma or GED, clean criminal record and ability to perform physical nature of the work.

Trainees in West Virginia are required to complete at least 120 hours of approved training before they are eligible to challenge the CNA certification licensing exam. The total amount of training required exceeds the federal minimum requirement of 75 credit hours by about 50%.

Can I Transfer My CNA License to West Virginia?

If you are a certified nursing assistant from another state and have just moved to West Virginia you can apply to the Nursing Aide Registry in West Virginia for what is called “reciprocity”. As long as you can provide verification that you completed a state approved CNA certification program, are currently certified in another state, and have worked as a CNA recently. You would not need to take the West Virginia exam or training if you are granted reciprocity. CNA licenses usually need to be renewed every two years.

How Much Does CNA Training Cost? How Long Does it Take?

The average cost of the CNA certification exam is $100 dollars. The test includes two separate sections and both must be passed successfully to gain certification. The first section is comprised of 100 written multiple choice questions and candidates are allowed two hours to complete this portion of the exam. The second section is a hands-on skills test that requires the student to erform 5 essential nurse aide skills. The five skills will be chosen by the testing administrator from a list of 25 possible tasks. All 5 skills must be performed satisfactorily to achieve a passing score.
