One of the great things about becoming a CNA is the strong employment outlook for the future. Many CNAs are employed in a long term care facility or a nursing home. In these settings the CNA has a resident or group of residents for whom he/she is responsible for. Their duties will include taking vital signs, keeping daily records, assisting with basic necessities (such as brushing teeth, bathing, dressing, etc). Some nursing facilities will provide free CNA training, or pay for training elsewhere, in exchange for an agreement to work at the facility for a specified amount of time (usually 6 months to 1 year) upon successful completion of training and certification. A CNA who chooses to work in home healthcare would be responsible for all of the above plus assisting the client with light housework and meal preparation. Many medical staffing agencies have job openings for CNAs. As a CNA for an agency a person would be sent to different facilities as the need arises. Nursing agencies generally require that a CNA has been working in the field for some time (usually at least 1 year). There is usually no guarantee of hours with a nursing agency, but the temporary nature of the work might be beneficial for some people. In order to work as a CNA in the state of North Carolina, one must complete a state-approved nurse aide education program. A good training program will include training in general nursing skills, basic diagnostic skills, emergency care, patient’s rights, infection control, and CPR training. All state-approved courses include at least 75 hours of training time (at least 16 clinical and 16 classroom hours).
