In Mississippi, certified nurse aides, also known as nursing assistants or CNAs for short, are basic health care providers who work directly with patients under the general supervision of a doctor or nurse in medical care facilities. As with other types of care providers, ideal CNA candidates will be patient, compassionate, have great interpersonal and communication skills, and have a genuine desire to help others. There are a few more job titles that are commonly used to refer to certified nurse aides: * Patient Care Technicians In order to secure a position as a CNA you must either have a high school diploma or the equivalent and have taken CNA training classes as part of a CNA training program and successfully passed the Nurse Aide competency evaluation test. This last part is very important because in order to work in any medical facility as a certified nursing assistant you must possess certification from the state in which you are practicing. The state board of nursing is responsible for oversight of CNA training programs and must ensure that students prepared to perform the skills required of a CNA. * Patient/Resident Rights Often you can find health care facilities like nursing homes that offer free CNA training and will even pay for the state test. In exchange for the free training, the facility usually requires that you become their employee for a minimum period of time after completing your training and certification. One advantage of these types of programs is that you have the opportunity to learn while you are getting paid to work. Another advantage is that the training typically lasts a short period of time (about 2-6 weeks). Additionally, you already have a job in place once you become certified. After you conclude your training, contact Pearson Vue (exam administrators) so that they can send you an application. A completed application, along with the testing fee is ($89.00) is required before an exam date can be scheduled. Upon successfully passing the test, a certification number will be assigned and Pearson Vue will mail your certified nursing assistant license. The CNA position is in great demand, but be advised that career advancement opportunities are limited without additional education. The average wage range for a certified nursing assistant is between $10- $15 an hour, but this can vary greatly depending on geographic location and experience.
