Arizona Certified Nursing Assistant Careers If you are interested in becoming a nursing assistant in Arizona, you will have more employment opportunities and higher pay if you are board certified. A career as a nursing assistant enables you to help patients with their daily activities. This is a non-medical position and is under the supervision of a nurse whether it is in the patient’s home or in an assisted living facility. To become a certified nursing assistant, also known as a CNA, one must complete a CNA certified training program and pass the Arizona CNA Certification Exam. A training program can be completed in as little as six weeks. Required Training for CNA in Arizona The Arizona Board of Nursing also known as the AZBN, requires 120 hours of coursework taken through an approved program in addition to hands-on training consisting of 100 hours, prior to taking the state certification exam. The classroom work can vary depending upon the training program chosen, however the basics remain the same. The basic curriculum includes medical terminology, nursing fundamentals, human anatomy, controlling infections, medical ethics, patient rights and privacy, emergency care, and rehabilitation care. Hands-on training requires working with other CNAs and nurses at actual health care facilities. There are over 100 CNA training programs in Arizona, including high schools, colleges and community centers. In general, a high school diploma or GED is required. You must score at least 75% on the written exam and on the practical exam 80% or more. The application for the state exam currently costs $50. Arizona CNA Salary Range On average, the salary range for a CNA can be from $17,000 up to $30,000 a year, depending upon experience and region. The current state-wide average is $25,300 per year. Arizona has approximately 18,500 nurse aides, ranking 30th in the country and having the 23rd highest pay rates in the nation. Arizona has a large aging population and with longer anticipated life spans becoming a CNA in Arizona is a wise choice. The healthcare industry continues to grow and nursing assistants are in high demand. If you are a certified nursing assistant from another state and have just moved to Arizona you can apply to the Nursing Aide Registry in Arizona for what is called “reciprocity”. As long as you can provide verification that you completed a state approved CNA certification program, are currently certified in another state, and have worked as a CNA recently. You would not need to take the Arizona exam or training if you are granted reciprocity. How to Become a CNA in Arizona To become a Certified Nursing Assistant in Arizona you must complete the necessary steps to obtain certification from the Arizona state board of nursing. The first step is to find and complete an approved CNA training program. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) requires all CNA programs to include a minimum of 75 hours of instruction. Individual states might require additional training beyond the national minimum. Most programs take about 6-12 weeks to finish. The average cost of a CNA training course is between $400 – $800. The second step is to take the Arizona CNA certification exam and achieve a passing score. The third and final step is to register with the Arizona Nurse Aide Registry as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
